I'm sure you've seen a lot of websites showing you need to act on this or act on that if you want to increase your score in no time!

While the internet is filled with loads of "helpful" advice, I recommend you stay away from those too good to be true offers.

But that's a whole different story on its own!

Now if you're new to repairing your own credit, you may have seen numerous places to get your credit report absolutely free.

While the saying: "If it's too good to be true it probably is" might prevent you from getting a free report...DON'T.

Everyone is entitled to a least one credit report per year from each of the 3 major credit bureaus.

The bureaus I'm referring to are: Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion.

Monitor your activity

When you get a copy of your credit report it'll contain all your financial accounts and the current status (open or closed), any bankruptcy settlements, accounts that are considered delinquent, credit cards and the associated account numbers, you name it.

Your credit report will allow you to identify whether the information that appears is true or not. Only you know best if an item listed is correct.

If not, this brings us to next reason you need to request a free credit report.

Dispute errors

This point builds on the first one. If you don't request a credit report, you can't monitor the activity; therefore you won't be able to dispute any errors.

If you discover an error that shouldn't be listed, file a dispute with the credit bureau. They have a certain window of opportunity to justify the entries in dispute. They typically have 30 days from the date of dispute to provide proof.

It also helps to send any supporting documents that indicate you're in good standing. Let's face it, nothing in this world is ever perfect and mistakes can be made - including on credit reports.

Create financial stability

Your credit score helps determine how creditworthy you are. If you aren't taking the steps needed to ensure things are in order on your credit report, you could possibly be costing yourself more money.

What I'm referring to here are interest rates. When you apply for a loan or home mortgage the rate you get will vary based on your credit score.

If you're not taking the initiative to monitor your credit file, you could be leaving items on your report that shouldn't be there.

Those one or two little items can make a difference in the percentage rate you get. This can result in thousands of dollars or more coming out of your pocket over the long haul.

It really doesn't get any better than that. Obtaining a free credit report will allow you to start building a good credit history. It will also allow you to dispute items that shouldn't be on your report to begin with. Use it to your advantage.
